It feels weird to describe a film that made $118 million in its opening weekend as ‘under-performing’ - especially given how crappy the box office has been these past few weeks for major franchise and studio releases - but 2019 is a weird time and Disney don’t operate by the usual rules. So here we are. Toy Story 4 made $118 million but that’s about $22 million less than the lowest projections Box Office Mojo had for it. A lot of us were expecting this film to easily be one of the biggest hits of 2019, but even with the biggest opening weekend this series has seen, it’s not what Disney wanted. It’s the fourth largest animated movie opening weekend ever, but it’s about $62 million less than what Incredibles 2 did last year in its first weekend. It’s a surprise, to be sure, particularly since Toy Story 4 was very positively reviewed, far better than many of us were expecting. So what’s to blame? Did franchise fatigue hit even the seemingly invincible players? Were fans just not all that revved up for a fourth film added to an arguably perfect trilogy? Or are families just saving up their coins for The Lion King?

Coming in at number two is the remake/reboot/whatever of Child’s Play, which took in just over $14 million from over 3000 theatres. Not too shabby, and on a rumoured $10 million budget so mission accomplished. Aladdin continues to perform far higher than anyone predicted, and has crossed over $810 million worldwide, making it the third highest grossing movie of 2019 so far.

The news was less positive for Men in Black: International, which fell from one to four and saw a 64% drop from last weekend, bringing its domestic gross to $52 million on a budget that’s over double that. Ouch. Sony will be glad Spider-Man: Far From Home looks set to ease the pain for them.

Opening just outside of the top ten is Anna, Luc Besson’s latest sexy lady fight movie, which took in a mere $3.5 million from over 2100 theatres. Audiences just didn’t care. My heart bleeds for Besson, who has been accused of rape and sexual misconduct.

In indie news, the Scottish musical drama Wild Rose took in over $56k from four theatres; the documentary Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am made $44k from the same number of locations; and The Quiet One, a documentary on Rolling Stones bassist Bill Wyman, grossed over $10k from six theatres.

This coming week sees the release of Annabelle Comes Home and Yesterday.
