Greetings from Toronto! While I have a free hour between screenings/writing/eating the free food in the press room, I thought I’d return to you all with this week’s box office report. I am, if nothing else, a professional.

In a quiet week for new releases, as is often the case in the liminal space between Summer and awards season, The Nun did big money. Warner Bros. may have to forever deal with the bad press from their other major franchise, the DCEU, but the surprising creative stretching of The Conjuring into its own horror saga has proven mightily effective. The latest sequel/prequel/spin-off/I’m not entirely sure set a franchise opening weekend record, both at home and internationally, and its $53.5m domestic debut is the second largest September opening ever. It’s made close to 2.5 times its budget at home already. From 5 films so far, the world of The Conjuring has made close to $500m.

Crazy Rich Asians continues to hold on strong with an extra $13.6m bringing its domestic total to over $136m. Its changes in profit from week to week remain pretty small - 38% down in week four - which suggests major re-watch power.

Behind it and debuting at number 3 is Peppermint, which made $13.26m. That’s about what Box Office Mojo had predicted and the CinemaScore ranking is strong. Critics were less kind, and by that I mean they savaged this film for its Fox News racist dog-whistle bullshit. Honestly, by the time 2018 ends, there will be a fascinating piece to be written on the red state thriller boost (see this, Sicario: Day of the Soldado and the remake of Death Wish). I’d call dibs on that idea but then I would have to watch them all.

Missing out on the top ten is God Bless the Broken Road, a Christian inspirational movie apparently based on a song. They may have been trying to replicate the surprise success of I Can Only Imagine but it didn’t work as this one only took in $1.5m in its opening weekend. The studio were expecting close to four times that number.

In limited release, Magnolia’s documentary Kusama: Infinity, about the legendary Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama, opened with $30,400 from two locations. Pick of the Litter, a documentary about puppies training to be guide dogs, saw its weekend gross double when it opened to an extra 8 theatres. PUPPIES! Also some film called Realms opened in three theatres and made $118, and I cannot find any information on this film. Like, at all. I can’t find anything about it on the distributor’s website, but I did discover they’re the same people who released that bullshit documentary about how wonderful Andrew Wakefield is so fuck that.

This coming week sees the release of White Boy Rick, the Pure Flix sequel to Unbroken, Blake Lively’s fashion plate movie A Simple Favor, and the latest take on The Predator. Now sex offender free!
