Box Office Report: Jurassic Box Office (High Heels Not Included)

Expectations for Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom were high, and the film managed to soar past them with an estmated $150m opening weekend. According to Box Office Mojo, this is only the 2nd time in history that two different films have brought in over $100m from two consecutive weekends. Who knows, maybe this Summer at the North American box office will be an improvement from 2017’s disastrous numbers? That would help a lot of producers sleep a lot easier, poor dears. Funnily enough, even with $150m in the bank, that’s still about $58m less than what its 2015 predecessor managed.

Of course, competition this time around was tougher, with Incredibles 2 still pulling in the big family demographic. Pixar’s latest dropped 55 percent but still brought in over $80m, which is miles ahead of everything else aside from the big hungry dinosaurs. It’s already the 4th biggest Pixar release ever, ahead of Finding Nemo. So far, its international gross after 10 days on release — and opening wide in places like China this weekend — sits at around $485m. If this doesn’t make $1bn, I’ll be stunned. But will it be a bigger film than Fallen Kingdom by the end of 2018?

In other old release news: Ocean’s 8 officially past $100m domestically; Tag took a 45% tumble in its second week but has made its budget back with change so it’s all good; Solo has now made $200m domestically, but it’s still about $50m off its budget and dammit I still love that movie; and Won’t You Be My Neighbor? is still packing in audiences as its limited release slowly builds up to 350 theatres - $1.875m in its third week of release, and finally in the top 10!

Oddly enough, Overboard has been hanging in strong and has made about $49m domestically. That’s nothing to sneeze at given its small budget and awful reviews, and proof of Eugenio Derbez’s power with his intended Latino demographic. Anna Faris still deserves better.

In limited release, The Catcher Was a Spy debuted in 49 theatres with around $122k, while the amazingly titled Lobster Cop made around $35k from 12 locations (a small but mighty audience for Chinese cinema, and also how can you not love that title?) Robert Pattinson continues his indie cinema dominance with Damsel, a feminist Western comedy that took in $21k from only three theatres. Ah, the creative freedom you get when you’ve got all that sweet Twilight money.

New releases this coming week include the comedy Uncle Drew, the Emily Blunt-less sequel to Sicario, and A24’s newest release, Woman Walks Ahead.
