Box Office Report: Seriously, Did We All Know There Was a Playmobil Movie?!

Another quiet week but hey, Christmas is coming and so is Cats so just conserve your energy for now. Our time will come. Even with close to a 60% drop from last week, Frozen II stayed on top for the third week running. Domestically, it’s taken in over $337.5 million and its international total is just under $920 million, so expect this thing to be one of at least six or seven of the highest-grossing films of 2019 that comes courtesy of Disney. It’s fun because this media monopoly will one day own us all.

It is, however, pretty cool to see the next five spots on the list be occupied by various original dramas that are aimed more at older audiences and not obsessed with franchise fodder. Knives Out made $14.1 million while Ford v Ferrari is only $9 million off $100 million domestically. Queen & Slim has made just under $27 million domestically in two weeks, so it’s grossed back its budget, and A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood has held on well thanks to good word-of-mouth, giving it a $43 million domestic gross.

At number six, moving up 13 places on the chart, is Todd Haynes and Mark Ruffalo’s drama Dark Waters. Its expansion into over 2000 theaters saw its weekend gross jump by 560%. Not too shabby at all for a film that was released pretty quietly but has built up some serious critical momentum.

Notice the lack of new releases in the top ten this weekend. To find one, you need to go all the way to 14 for Playmobil: The Movie. Yes, this is a real movie and not a joke from The Onion. No, I did not remember its existence until I started writing this post. Yes, Daniel Radcliffe, Adam Lambert, and Meghan Trainor are in this. Together at last! Audiences were clearly not enthused by this offering since it only made $660,000 from 2,337 theaters. To put that in perspective, it made $40k less than Parasite, a film that’s been out for nine weeks and is currently only playing in 333 theaters nationwide.

One of my favorite films of the year, Portrait of a Lady on Fire, opened in two theaters and made $67,105. If you have the chance to catch this one, please do. It’s truly wonderful.

This coming week sees the release of Clint Eastwood’s Richard Jewell, Adam Sandler’s Uncut Gems, the sequel Jumanji: The Next Level, horror remake Black Christmas, Fox News drama Bombshell, and biopic Seberg.
