It’s now officially February, which means we’re out of the January dump month but we’re not onto greener pastures quite yet. This is historically a dry month too, notable exceptions aside like when Disney released Black Panther. 2025 won’t see any major releases like that though. But we did have a superhero leading the way at this box office this past weekend. Sort of. He was the hero we needed, if not necessarily the one we wanted: Dog Man.

DreamWorks Animation’s adaptation of the beloved Dav Pilkey kids’ novels, Dog Man, easily took the top spot. Reviews were good, and it’s also a movie about a ninja dog-man cop who fights an evil cat voiced by Pete Davidson. What more could you ask for? It made $36 million from 3,885 theatres.

It easily outperformed Companion, the sci-fi thriller starring Jack Quaid. Granted, family films will almost always do better than the stuff intended for adults. Companion felt like solid January release fodder: not brilliantly reviewed but low budget and high concept enough to pull in numbers to get into the black with its grosses. So, it debuted at number two with $9.5 million from 3,285 cinemas.

At number 14 is Creation of the Gods II: Demon Force, a Chinese epic fantasy sequel based on a classic 16th-century novel. This was intended as the big release for Lunar New Year in China, and it’s already made over $123 million there. While it won’t break the bank in American cinemas, it still earned $848,308 from only 200 locations, which is pretty impressive.

It easily outdid Valiant One, a gung-ho patriotic war movie about American soldiers in North Korea, which only earned $725,000 from 1,275 theatres. It also did better than Love Me, a post-apocalyptic romance with Steven Yeun and Kristen Stewart, which only made $204,036 from 527 places.

No Other Land is a documentary about a Palestinian-Israeli collective documenting the occupation in the West Bank. It recently received an Oscar nomination for Best Documentary Feature despite not having a distributor. So, it was independently released into one location this past weekend and earned $26,100. Keep your eyes open for this one.

This coming week sees the release of Ke Huy Quan’s action movie Love Hurts and the Valentine’s Day horror Heart Eyes.
