Happy Easter! Hope you enjoyed your eggs, your bunnies, and your Christian salvation, if that’s your thing. I just bought cake, went to Five Guys, then walked around town listening to podcasts. The movie world was relatively quiet at the box office, with The Curse of La Llorona easily taking the top spot and passing Warner Bros. and New Line’s expectations. The R-rated horror made about $26.5m and did decently with audiences, despite tepid reviews. It’s part of a growing franchise that knows how to market itself well and you can’t go wrong with a mid-budget horror movie released to little to no competition. This one’s already made back about 3 times its budget domestically and crossed $56m worldwide.

Shazam! fell to number two in its third week, dropping only 29.1%, suggesting audiences are coming to this one more thanks to strong reviews and the need to kill time before Avengers: Endgame. Another movie benefitting from that boost is Captain Marvel, which has now officially grossed $400m domestically. With around $1.089 billion in the bank, it’s still got a while to go before it catches up to the $1.347 billion made by Black Panther but I think we can assume this one will easily be a top five film of 2019. Maybe top three? We still have some big films on the horizon and most of them are Disney properties. Ah, media monopolies.

Debuting at number three is Breakthrough, which did solid Christian inspirational movie business with a $11.1m weekend. Eh, at least it’s not Unplanned, but as Overlord Mike wrote, it’s still bullsh*t.

Finishing outside the top ten is Penguins, a Disneynature documentary that made a dismal $2.3m from over 1800 theatres. That’s the worst debut for a Disneynature film yet. Something tells me that their future documentaries will probably end up being Disney+ exclusives come November.

Right below that at number 13 is Kalank. The Indian period drama took in over $1.2m from 320 theatres.

In indie news: Little Woods with Tessa Thompson took in over $66k from 33 theatres; Judi Dench’s Red Joan made $40k from 4 theatres; A24’s Under the Silver Lake finally got a super limited release of 2 theatres and took in over $40k but will be streaming soon, so they’re writing this one off hard; Fast Color made $37,500 from 25 theatres; the documentary Hail Satan? grossed $25,700 from 3 theatres. It’s almost like they’re pushing out these titles before every film gets crushed by Thanos and company. Enjoy it while it lasts!

This week sees the coming release of you know what. And also The White Crow. Sorry, Ralph Fiennes.
