This was the new line of attack from the sexist creeps who claim their boycott of Brie Larson’s white genocide agenda is making Disney quake in their shoes. Oh look, less people saw it in the follow-up to its wildly successful opening weekend, clearly we’re killing its profits. Sure, whatever. Except that Captain Marvel actually dipped less than experts were predicting it would. It dropped 54.8 percent when the average for the MCU is 56 percent. Ha. After just ten days, the film has made over $266m domestically and has now crossed $760m worldwide. It’s already the tenth highest grossing worldwide release in the MCU. So Brie Larson will be collecting your tears for her martini mixers now.

Outside of the MCU domination, the two biggest new releases of the weekend outperformed expectations. Wonder Park, which overcame tepid reviews and the small problem of not having a credited director, made $16m, meaning Paramount and Nickelodeon have a solid foundation for the planned spin-off T.V. series, which is already in production. Opening one spot below that at number three is Five Feet Apart, which made $13.15m from a thousand theatres fewer than Wonder Park, so not too shabby at all. Turns out the young people like that Sprouse guy. I don’t know. I don’t watch Riverdale.

New at number six is No Manches Frida 2, with $3.89m from only 472 cinemas. This is the sequel to a Mexican comedy from 2016 that’s a remake of a German comedy from 2013. I hadn’t heard of it before but it’s always exciting to see films not in the English language break into the box office top ten. It’s also a good sign of the financial power of Latinx audiences. Oh if only Hollywood would take note. Below it at number seven is Captive State, which only made $3.1m from over five times the number of theatres of No Manches Frida 2. Ouch.

In the indie circuit this weekend: The Mustang opened to $76k from four theatres; Chinese drama Ash Is Purest White, which premiered at Cannes last year, made $45,150 from seven theatres; we had an Alexander Skarsgård double bill with The Aftermath ($57,500 from five theatres) and The Hummingbird Project ($36,027 from four theatres). Audiences seemed to prefer the film where he isn’t bald. Go figure.

This coming week sees the release of Hotel Mumbai, thus ensuring the cinematic domination of Dev ‘please cast him as Bond’ Patel, and Jordan Peele’s Us.
