It was a quiet weekend, with a couple of somewhat-wide releases and neither doing brilliant business at the box office. Instead, we had to turn to the old school leading men to help us with the grosses. Brad Pitt’s Bullet Train stayed in the top spot with a soft second week, dropping about 55% with an extra $13.4 million in the bank. It’s solid business for what it is, although I don’t think we’re expecting this one to break any records. No, that job falls, once again, to Tom Cruise and Top Gun: Maverick.

The biggest film of the year so far has been in cinemas for 12 weeks now, and in that entire time, it’s remained in the top six with ease. Now, it’s pulled its way back into third place with $7.15 million, which is a 1.6% increase from last week. Seriously, seeing any sort of rise in grosses after three months of wide release is kind of startling. Yet Top Gun: Maverick has real staying power. Word-of-mouth remains wildly enthusiastic and it seems that people are returning to the cinema for repeat viewings. Sure, it’s getting a VOD release soon, but this is a movie that demands as big a screen as possible, and I think viewers are taking advantage of that. Well done, Paramount. I wonder if this will lead to a boost for Cruise’s next Mission: Impossible film.

The two biggest new releases of the weekend did not do gangbusters. Opening at number ten is Fall with $2.5 million from 1,548 theaters. Reviews were mixed but it also has a tiny budget so if this thing pulls in even minor numbers abroad then it’s a safe bet for Lionsgate. Things weren’t so good for the comedy Mack and Rita, which debuted at number 12 with only $1.095 million from 1,930 theaters. For comparison’s sake, the 2022 re-release of E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial made about $1.07 million from 389 theaters.

In limited release news: Laal Singh Chaddha, the Hindi-language remake of Forrest Gump, grossed $1.47 million from 516 theaters; Aubrey Plaza’s Emily the Criminal took in $668,990 from 473 cinemas; the anime musical Inu-oh earned $190,524 from 350 locations; and the coming-of-age drama Summering grossed $31,317 from 260 theaters.

This coming week sees the release of the Idris Elba vs. lion thriller Beast.
