Box Office Report: Road Trip

As February comes to an end and I wonder how the hell the first two months of the year are over already, a couple of mid-budget movies went head-to-head and were still beaten by the almighty power of anime. But before we get there, it’s time to return to Bob Marley: One Love, which stayed on top at the box office in its second week of release. Its 52.9% drop from the previous week and $13.5 million gross was harsh but enough to fend off some admittedly mid competition. It’s already made double what Madame Web has grossed domestically. Sorry, Dakota Johnson, I’m sure you’re devastated by this.

Is there anything more delightfully overblown than the titles for anime movies? The latest title to do solid business with North American audiences is *deep breath* Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba - To the Hashira Training. It landed at number two with $11.57 million from 1,949 locations. Love ya, nerds.

Hilary Swank’s Ordinary Angels, based on a true story, landed at number three with $6.5 million. That put it WAY ahead of Ethan Coen and Tricia Cooke’s Drive-Away Dolls. Despite the latter receiving stronger reviews, audiences just didn’t latch onto it, and it only debuted at number eight with $2.4 million from 2,280 cinemas.

Universal decided to re-release Les Misérables in 162 theatres for some reason, which earned them $337,000. That put it a spot above the horror film Stopmotion, which grossed $330,398 from 384 theatres.

In limited release news: the re-release of Tarkovsky’s Nostalghia, one of the true legends of 20th-century cinema, grossed $29,399 from two cinemas; the comedy Drugstore June made $18,665 from two locations; Turkish drama About Dry Grasses earned $14,400 from three theatres; and the animated documentary They Shot the Piano Player brought in $8,075 from two places.

This coming week sees the release of Dune: Part Two. Sand. It’s everywhere. Get used to it.
