For those of you who were taking bets on how long it would take Avengers: Infinity War to gross $1bn, pay out to the person who predicted 11 days. Yup, less than two weeks and it pulled it off. It, obviously, remains at the top of the box office this week, grossing another $112m in its second week. That means it took in $50m domestically in only 10 days, which is only a day more than Star Wars: The Force Awakens managed it. Infinity War made $1bn fastest, but it’s also the 6th Marvel film to cross that threshold, as well as the 17th one from Disney. Overall, 34 films have made $1bn at the box office (although if we adjust for inflation, it’s a whole other ball game). How much money can it make before it leaves theatres? That’s the next guess. Does it go over $2bn? I don’t see why not, although that’s still easier said than done. Let’s see how it does in China, where it opens on 11th May.

Coming in second is Overboard, the remake of the surprisingly beloved 80s rom-com, this time starring Anna Faris and Eugenio Derbez. With $14.75m in the bank, that seems to be more than many were predicting, and the Cinemascore number is very high, at A-. There’s a lot of love for the original film, and Derbez is a huge star in Mexico and the Latin market, which certainly didn’t hurt. Any film coming in the aftermath of Marvel’s titan has a mountain to climb, but hey, there’s always an audience for a rom-com, even one with a plot as obviously evil as this one.

Tully, the latest collaboration between Jason Reitman, Diablo Cody and Charlize Theron, debuted with a disappointing $3.1m. Usually, that number for a film like this in the aftermath of Marvel would be okay, but Focus decided to give this one a pretty wide release of over 1300 theatres, and I’m not sure the audience was there for it. A film with strong reviews like this could have benefited from a more limited release and going wider once the word-of-mouth was there.

Rounding up new releases in the top 10 is Bad Samaritan, which took in $1.7m from over 2000 theatres. Ouch. As noted by Box Office Mojo, that’s the 10th worst opening ever for a film debuting in over 2000 theatres.

The Notorious RBG documentary also opened in limited release this weekend, and brought in an impressive $560k from only 34 theatres. We could all use a little more Ginsburg in our lives, and it’s good to see a documentary playing well. We can’t just keep dumping them all onto Netflix. They deserve theatrical runs too!

Disobedience, starring Rachel Weisz and Rachel McAdams, expanded its limited release and managed an over $10k average gross per theatre from only 31 screens. Word of mouth has been very strong here. It’s important to note that smaller indie films can still do good business even in the shadow of superheroes. Sometimes, studios seem to forget that.

This coming week sees the release of Breaking In, starring Gabrielle Union, and Life of the Party, the latest Melissa McCarthy comedy.
