In this shiny new year, it turns out what we really want is to watch a film where a woman wears a jellyfish dress. I heartily support this decision. Aquaman holds onto the top spot for the third weekend in a row, helped by lack of competition and post-Christmas exhaustion. With just under $260m domestically in the bank, the film offers good news for the DCEU. Internationally, it’s doing even better and wildly surpassing conservative estimates. Its $940m worldwide total - and expect this thing to easily pass the $1bn mark - places it at number 5 on the highest grossing films of 2018, ahead of Venom.
At number 2, the only new release of the week, is Escape Room with $18m. It’s already doubled its budget so it did its job. Not bad for a shlocky horror film with meh reviews opening in the dumping ground of January.
Mary Poppins Returns slips to number 3 with $15.7m, which is only a 44% drop from the previous weekend. I’m curious to see if this thing can go full The Greatest Showman in the coming weeks with a long-term slow-burn box office that pushes it into mega numbers domestically. As kids go back to school, that’ll be much harder to accomplish.
Bumblebee slid to number 5 with $12.7m. It’s still about $40m off making back its budget domestically but those international numbers are coming in much stronger, and it hasn’t even opened in China yet. With a $289m worldwide total so far, Paramount can breathe a little easier. I can’t believe I’m rooting for a Transformers movie.
Vice saw a 25% drop from last weekend, even as it expanded into more theatres, but it’s still a strong performer given the seriously mixed reviews and tough subject matter at a time when we aren’t exactly craving it. Still, it’s a $60m movie that’s made about $30m domestically so far. It’ll need to do a hell of a lot better for Annapurna to justify those costs.
Bohemian Rhapsody has made $193.6m domestically. It’s probably going to get a Best Picture Oscar nomination. F-ck everything and f-ck you, Bryan Singer.
Two much hyped awards favourites expanded their release schedules this week and saw strong results. If Beale Street Could Talk saw a 141% rise from last weekend, bringing its domestic box office to $4.4m from 4 weeks release. The Ruth Bader Ginsburg biopic On the Basis of Sex did similar numbers and is at $3.7m after 2 weeks. Destroyer had the highest per-screen average of the week as its 6 theatre run brought in just over $110k. Meanwhile, Welcome to Marwen - remember that? - fell a sharp 69.9% from last weekend, bringing in only $673k. This film cost $39m and has only made $10.3m domestically. Ouch.
This coming week see another dry release for films, including A Dog’s Way Home, a Keanu Reeves sci-fi called Replicas and The Upside, a remake of the French film The Intouchables. It was originally a Weinstein Company movie. It stars Kevin Hart. Hmm…
