I hope you had a good Thanksgiving weekend, my American friends! Enjoy those turkey leftover sandwiches and shop ethically for Black Friday, if such a thing is even possible. As expected, it was a very busy weekend at the movies for families wishing to join together in a heartwarming activity that didn’t enjoy talking to one another.

Families with young kids stayed on brand and flocked to Frozen II, which took in $85.2 million over the weekend. Worldwide, it’s already made *deep breath* $738,573,344 in just over two weeks. So, you know, Disney rules us all, please don’t smite me, Bob Iger/Mickey Mouse/Baby Yoda.

Rian Johnson’s whodunnit mystery Knives Out surpassed Lionsgate’s expectations to bring in $41.7 million this week. Reviews have been very strong and it felt like the perfect movie for the time, especially for those audiences that have less interest in talking snowmen these days. I’m sure the people who have made it their life’s work to hate Star Wars: The Last Jedi are taking Johnson’s success with grace and dignity. Haaaaa…

Both Ford v Ferrari and A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood held on strong, taking third and fourth place respectively. The former has certainly found its audience through word-of-mouth while the latter is seeing similar success, albeit on a smaller scale. Adult dramas aren’t dead at the cinema yet.

More proof of that comes in the shape of Queen & Slim, which debuted at number five with a $15.8 million first-week run. This week feels like a good example of how counter-programming against the might of Disney blockbusters can work when you play your cards right. Alas, this week seems to be an exception that proves the new rule.

Well, it’s now December so that means it’s Christmas season. Yikes. Where did the time go and why does this keep happening to me every year? Time makes fools of us all. Anyway, what that means is we’re going to see a lot of limited releases get under the wire in time for Oscar qualifications, and then we’ll face the one-two-three might of the family blockbusters: Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Jumanji: The Next Level, and, of course, Cats. Are you prepared? Are any of us? Stay tuned.

This coming week sees the release of Playmobil: The Movie, because why not, and limited runs for Little Joe, the astounding Portrait of a Lady on Fire, and The Aeronauts, starring our nemesis, Eddie Redmayne.
