While it’s unclear why some people continue to ask directors what their feelings are about superhero films, at least Parasite (which you should go see!) director Bong Joon-ho gave an unexpected and relatable answer. Simply put, Bong Joon-ho wouldn’t direct a superhero movie not because he doesn’t like them, but because he hates it when people wear tight clothes. It’s clear he has never owned a pair of spandex or tights!
Like so many others before him, Bong Joon-ho was asked to offer an opinion on Martin Scorsese’s comments about superhero films not being cinematic. (As an aside: we’ve ALL read enough about the Martin Scorsese vs. Marvel debacle to last us a lifetime.) The director, who also helmed 2013’s Snowpiercer, gave Variety a fairly level-headed response about the whole debate. When asked whether or not he would ever direct a superhero film, his response was a very firm no.
Here’s his full quote:
“I have a personal problem. I respect the creativity that goes into superhero films, but in real life and in movies, I can’t stand people wearing tight-fitting clothes. I’ll never wear something like that, and just seeing someone in tight clothes is mentally difficult. I don’t know where to look, and I feel suffocated. Most superheroes wear tight suits, so I can never direct one.”
This isn’t to say that he doesn’t like superhero films at all, because he does. They have some “great cinematic moments” ok? However, for anyone who’s ever found it awkward to stare at someone wearing underwear over their tights, then Bong Joon-ho’s probably your man.
Honestly, this is one of the most hilarious and surprising responses, which is nice because it offers a new spin on all the recycled superhero questions. If reporters aren’t going to stop asking, we may as well get new answers, right? Is it a weird reason? Sure. Does Bong Joon-ho really need to direct a superhero film? Probably not. He’s brought us such nuanced dramas about inequality and the wealth gap that there’s no need for him to venture off into the land of
superheroes tight-fitting clothes, anyway.
