This one came out of nowhere.

After Danny Boyle left as director of the next Bond film last month, producers had to scramble to find a new one. Conservative choices like David Mackenzie, Yann Demange, and Joe Wright were thought to be among the frontrunners for the gig, but producers ended up going with a more distinctive director who has also left other projects over “creative differences”: Cary Fukunaga.

A bit about Fukanaga: The film that gained Fukunaga critical attention was Sin Nombre, which led to a pretty fantastic horror adaptation of Jane Eyre, although many of us still know him best for his stellar work directing the entire first season of True Detective and that brilliant oner and where he also frequently butted heads with creator and writer Nic Pizzolatto. Since then, he has only one feature film, Netflix’s Beasts of No Nation, although he was tapped to write and direct It before dropping out of that film over creative differences (he’s still credited as a co-screenwriter). He’d also been attached to a film about Hiroshima.

Tomorrow he has a new Netflix series due out with Jonah Hill and Emma Stone, Maniac, which I hear is getting nice reviews, so far (ours will arrive next week).

For what it’s worth, last year we also included him among the hottest directors, not that his looks will have any bearing on his version of Bond, which will likely be a little more sinister than the Bond films we’re accustomed to. But looks don’t hurt during the promotional efforts.

It’s a good choice, and it hasn’t gone unnoticed, either, that he worked closely with Idris Elba in Beasts of No Nation, should Fukunaga want to stick around for another Bond film with a new James Bond.
