High school is not like the movies. It’s not a place of wild Ferris Bueller adventures or Pretty In Pink romance. It’s a place of drudgery, disappointment, and petty bullshit. And that is the central gripe of this musical number from the high school musical (/zombie horror/holiday comedy) Anna and the Apocalypse.

I’ve been singing the praises for this bonkers genre mash-up since its Fantastic Fest world premiere last year. So let me give you a wee bit of background for this Scottish delight. Anna (Elia Hunt) is tired of her small town, and can’t wait to get out. Her best friend John (Malcolm Cumming) is crushing on her hard, but is not on her romantic radar. Meanwhile, Chris (Christopher Leveaux) and Lisa (Marli Siu) are that high school couple so cute and perfect for each other, you can’t tell if you want them to kiss or keel over.

Check out “Hollywood Ending” with sing-along subtitles.

Anna and the Apocalypse opens in limited release on November 30. Until then, learn more about this toe-tapping horror-comedy with my interview with director John McPhail.
