The Beverly Hills Cop films are funny. Yes, all three of them. Even when they aren’t at their best, they still feature Eddie Murphy cracking-wise and surrounded by a cast of funny supporting characters. It’s a much different direction than it would have been had the films starred Sylvester Stallone as originally intended. One thing the movies contain that rivals most Stallone flicks is action.
The Beverly Hills Cop movies are also fantastic action movies. They feature thrilling chases, big set pieces, and shootouts galore. When I was younger, I marveled at Axel hanging from a large amusement park ride, attempting to save two children from falling to certain doom. Have I mentioned I have a soft spot for the third film? The newest film in the franchise, arriving thirty years after the third, looks action-packed as well.
A new trailer for the film highlights all the high-octane thrills we’ve come to expect from the franchise. We’ve got an eighteen-wheeler driving through a house. Joseph Gordon Levitt flying a helicopter through the LA streets. Kevin Bacon fires a handgun out of a car. The action looks big, impressive, and mostly practical. It feels akin to the older films in the best way possible.
Details on the story are still light, but we’ll meet Axel Foley’s daughter in this film. There may or may not be some police corruption (never trust a mustachioed Kevin Bacon). JGL looks to be Axel’s new temporary partner. Still, we’ll see old favorites like John Ashton, Bronson Pinchot, and Judge Reinhold get in on the fun. The pieces are all in place, now we wait until July 3rd to see how they fit.
