Universal Pictures is teaming with Mattel Films to bring one of the greatest advocates for child literacy to the big screen. That’s right, they are going to make a Wishbone movie. Cue the theme song.

Wishbone was a popular PBS series (1995-1998) that centered on a Jack Russell terrier named Wishbone, who imagined himself as the heroes of classic tales, including Romeo and Juliet, The Odyssey, Cyrano de Bergerac, Rip Van Winkle, and Don Quixote. Soccer The Dog starred as the titular terrier, while the character’s voice was provided by human actor Larry Brantley.

What’s the story (with the new) Wishbone? THR reports it’d “a modern take” on the adored show with a script written by Roy Parker, who was featured on the 2019 Black List. There’s no hint as to which classic tale might wag in this adaptation or if Brantley will be asked to reprise the role. Sadly, Soccer won’t be asked, as he passed in 2001.

What we do know is that this is the latest collaboration between Universal and Mattel Films, who are in the works on a Barbie movie, which has Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach writing the script and Margot Robbie producing, as well as a Barney the dinosaur feature, which has Get Out’s Daniel Kaluuya producing.

So what hot talent does Wishbone have attached? Peter Farrelly. Oscar-winner, Green Book producer/co-writer/director/admitted wang waggler Peter Farrelly. The Peter Farrelly who before making his chronically mediocre White Savior movie made gross-out comedies like Dumb and Dumber, There’s Something About Mary, Shallow Hal and the all-kinds-of repulsive Movie 43, he is being entrusted with a kids movie.

This guy.
