The nominations are here for the 94th Academy Awards and it’s … well, it’s a mixed bag, to be sure. We expect this from our pals at Oscar H.Q.: lots of major snubs, way too much recognition for eh films, then a few surprises that make you once again believe in good things. This year, things veered wildly between the two fields.

The Power of the Dog’s Jane Campion made history by becoming the first female filmmaker to be nominated for Best Director more than once. The Japanese drama Drive My Car broke through in a big way with nominations in Picture, Director, Screenplay, and International Feature. Kristen Stewart received her first Oscar nomination for Spencer, a surprise on the morning given that many had written off her chances in a busy category. Steven Spielberg received his eighth Best Director nomination for West Side Story. There were many expected nominees here — Belfast, Don’t Look Up, and King Richard to name but three — as well as a few omissions. No Lady Gaga, no Bradley Cooper, no Caitriona Balfe, no Ruth Negga. Nobody saw J.K. Simmons coming with that supporting actor nod for Being the Ricardos (no Sorkin either so there’s some relief.) It’s a weird mix of lazy status quo (Judi Dench?!) and exciting changes, whether it’s Drive My Car or Bhutan receiving its first Best International Feature nom. They say blockbusters don’t fare well at the Oscars but Dune dominated the nominations (except for director, which makes me wonder if Hamaguchi got in over Villeneuve.)

Here are the nominees!
