Awards season for 2020 has officially begun! With the Oscars now happening two months later than originally planned, the entire season for the film world has followed accordingly. Now, movies premiering at the end of February 2021 qualify for last year’s run. Things are kicking off with the Golden Globes, and they really went full Golden Globes this season!
This year, a record three women were nominated for Best Director, which is a welcome step forward for the HFPA and their weird hesitation towards acknowledging that female filmmakers exist. Things were somewhat more mixed elsewhere, however, including major omissions for films like Minari. That title was infamously shoved into the Best Foreign Language film category despite being an American production. There was a surprising amount of love for The Mauritanian, a film that I’m not sure made many people’s predictions list. Spike Lee’s Da 5 Bloods was totally absent too.
Every year, there are a bunch of completely inexplicable nominations, actors getting recognition seemingly mostly because the HFPA wants to hang out with them. Step forward Jared Leto, James Corden, and everything related to Emily in Paris. Hamilton on Disney+ got some love, even though it’s just a recorded version of the Broadway show, but it getting nominated is very Golden Globes-esque.
As always, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association exists to fascinate and piss off Film Twitter, and it certainly did that with aplomb in what has been an undoubtedly weird year for film. Here are the nominations!
