Woof.

So, the Oscar nominations are out, and somehow, they managed to be even more disappointing than we had already prepared ourselves for. Another all-male Best Director line-up. 19 out of 20 acting nominees are white. Once again, they didn’t fill out the Best Picture category with ten nominees. 2019 was a staggering year for film but the Oscar nominations, as always, reduce it to its most beige state.

First, let’s look at the positives. A lot of love for Parasite, with Bong Joon-ho making history as a South Korean director here. It’s great to see my favorite actor of the year, Antonio Banderas, in the line-up. Rian Johnson getting nominated for his screenplay for Knives Out is something we can all celebrate. The animated feature line-up is really strong too.

And then there’s everything else.

No women for Best Director, AGAIN. As Issa Rae, who was announcing the nominees with John Cho said, congratulations to these men. Are you really saying that Todd Phillips is better than Lulu Wang, Marielle Heller, Greta Gerwig, Kasi Lemmons, etc? Jeez… Joker, correct me if I’m wrong, is also the most nominated film of the year?!

None of the Parasite cast was nominated, but the biggest and most embarrassing snub is the lack of Jennifer Lopez in Best Supporting Actress for Hustlers. We’ll get into this more later, but this is still really disheartening. Yes, the Oscars are silly and low stakes and all that jazz but in terms of reflecting how Hollywood sees itself and the path it wants to layout for its future, this isn’t hopeful.
