10 Films We're Aching To See At The Tribeca Film Festival

The Tribeca Film Festival kicks off today with a bevy of movies, TV shows, special events, and VR experiences. With so much to choose from, we’ve narrowed down the ten films we’re most excited to see.

Aardvark

In writer/director Brian Shoaf’s debut feature, our adored Jenny Slate stars as a therapist who finds herself in a conundrum when she falls for the super handsome brother (Jon Hamm) of her hallucinating and curious new patient (Zachary Quinto). I mean, Shoaf had us at “Jenny Slate stars.” Hamm and Quinto are bonuses.

Blame

22-year-old writer/director Quinn Shepard fronts her first feature, which loops in a high school production of The Crucible, theater kid jealously, and Chris Messina as a substitute teacher who seems poised to make a massive mistake. It looks like The Crush re-imagined from a female perspective. Color us enticed.

Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story

For decades, Hedy Lamarr was mostly known as a 1940’s Hollywood starlet with dazzling good looks. But this brainy bombshell was also an inventor whose innovations are at long last illuminated in this daring documentary.

Chris Gethard: Career Suicide

You might recognize Chris Gethard as the “that guy” in movies like The Heat and The Dictator, or shows like Broad City and Inside Amy Schumer. But in the wake of his hilarious and heartbreaking supporting turn in the outrageously great dramedy Don’t Think Twice, Gethard is getting vulnerable with a comedy special that goes deep, and looks spectacular.

The Circle

The big get of TFF 2017 is the thriller starring Emma Watson and Tom Hanks. Basically, imagine if Google was evil.

The Dinner

Writer/Director Oren Moverman has been bringing riveting drama to theaters with the moving character studies, The Messengers, Rampart, and Time out of Mind. For his latest, he collects another incredible cast—this time Richard Gere, Laura Linney, Steve Coogan, Chloë Sevigny, and Rebecca Hall—for a family dinner that’s super exclusive, suave, sexy, and ultimately hell on earth.

Get Me Roger Stone

He’s the guy in the top hat. He’s a self-proclaimed “agent provocateur.” He’s close to President* Trump. And it’s time we learned everything we can about Roger Stone.

Hounds of Love

This horror-thriller out of Australia has been gaining buzz for its harrowing tale of abduction at the hands of a couple of killers (Ashleigh Cummings and Stephen Curry). Their teen victim’s (Emma Booth) only chance at survival is manipulating her disturbed captors to turn on each other. Our stomachs are already doing backflips in anticipation of terror.

Manifesto

What began as an Australian-German multi-screen film installation has been condensed into a film that features Cate Blanchett in 13 different roles, delivering monologues. We owe writer/director/visionary Julian Rosefeldt a gift basket to thank him for this abundance of Blanchett.

Sweet Virginia

Jon Bernthal stars in this gritty neo-Western as a former rodeo star whose small Alaskan town is turned upside down by his new friend (Girls’ Christopher Abbot), a young man with a penchant for violence. Damn, we are suckers for a gritty Western. And with a cast that also boasts Imogen Poots and Rosemarie DeWitt, our expectations are high for this one.
