IGN is reporting that Jared Leto feels he was tricked into portraying The Joker in Suicide Squad. Leto was involved in a Q&A session at Camp Mars, a three-day camping experience for fans of 30 Seconds to Mars. Though it has since been removed, a Jared Leto tumblr had provided a summary of the actor’s thoughts on his turn as the Clown Prince of Crime.

He was very honest about the film this weekend; his disappointment in what he’s learned of the theatrical cut (he’s still not seen the film); feeling sort of tricked into being a part of something that had been pitched to him very differently; thinking it would’ve been more artistic than what it became; feeling overwhelmed by the hate regarding the look and choices…

It’s well documented that Leto thought his Joker was going to have a huge part in Suicide Squad. Leto has said in multiple interviews that he filmed enough footage for a standalone Joker flick. We have all heard about the cut scenes, like Harley being slapped by Joker as they quarrel. Of course, scenes and even entire roles are cut from films all of the time.

So is it really tricking someone into doing a film if the studio decides to go another way with the look, feel, or story line in the editing room? Sure, 7-10 minutes of screen time from an alleged 90-120 minutes of footage has got to hurt, but If Leto was a lesser known star, would he even claim to be tricked? How do his co-stars feel about Leto claiming he was deluded into playing Joker now that the film has received such negative reviews and a huge drop in box office sales in the second week of release?
