While that new Suicide Squad trailer slammed into your morning like an overtired toddler, throwing toys and screaming “Look at me!” Patty Jenkins and Gal Godot calmly strode in and without a word, took command of the room. Female directed, female led, and in a quiet step away from the usual DC fare, this is the Wonder Woman we’ve always wanted to see. Without getting too deep into comparisons, the retelling of Diana Prince’s origin story has a bit of a First Avenger vibe; at the same time it’s clearly a point of view we haven’t seen before.

After the first stern shots of Gal Godot were released, I wasn’t sure this version of the Amazonian superhero would be my cuppa, but with this footage, I’m all in. It’s
nice to see the nod to Lynda Carter’s bespectacled Diana,

with 100% less cheese. As DC CCO Geoff Johns puts it, “She’s the best fighter in the DC universe. She has strength and speed, and she’s been training her whole life for war.”

If they can manage to keep Chris Pine and that whole “love interest” thing way in the background, Wonder Woman could turn out to be the best thing that ever happened to the DC extended universe.

Wonder Woman also stars Robin Wright, Connie Nielsen, David Thewlis, Elena Anaya, Danny Huston, Lucy Davis and Ewen Bremner. It hits theaters June 23, 2017.
