What's Your Most Personal Movie?

Officially, this is the 317th comment diversion we’ve posted on Pajiba since our first, several years ago (an iPod shuffle game that seems almost quaint now, given that most have replaced their iPods with iPhones). It’s unimaginable to me that we haven’t yet thought to ask this question, but the archives suggests that we have not. It seems such an obvious diversion.

What is your most personal film? Not necessarily your favorite movie, but the one that you best identify with, that speaks to you the most, the one with which you can best relate? The one that best mirrors some of your own experiences?

And why?

For me, it’s been Billy Elliot for quite some time. Not because I wanted to grow up to be a ballet dancer, or because I’m from a working-class English town. It’s the whole “need to escape” theme (see also: Boy’s Life), and having a fucked-up parent willing to sacrifice himself to get you out. It’s this scene, at the six-minute mark. It kills me. It fucking kills me every time, no matter how many times I’ve seen it.

The day I review Billy Elliot in full is the day that Pajiba comes to an end.

So how about you, folks. Most personal movie?
