What's Your Favorite Suicide Song?

What the? Who brought Debbie Downer to a Friday afternoon Pajiba Music Party?

Let me be clear: there are some songs about suicide out there and some of them are really good. And I apologize in advance to anyone who has had to deal with suicide in their lives. I’m not trying to be flippant about it. It’s just a genre of music that sometimes gets overlooked because of the difficult subject matter.

Some of the songs in this genre are so powerful, it has the reverse effect. Because if there’s one thing that’s true about music, is that no matter what age you are, there’s always something new and phenomenal and life-affirming coming down the track.

Okay, a couple of happy images to keep everyone in a positive, healthy place…

…aaaaaand there we go. We good? Everyone okay? Okay, let’s do this.

Question 1: What’s your favorite suicide song?

For me, when I was a kid it was probably ‘I Don’t Like Mondays’ by Boomtown Rats. Now it’s either ‘Late’ by Ben Folds (a song he wrote about the death of Elliot Smith) or ‘A Little Bit Of Everything’ by Dawes. For some people it might be ‘Eleanor Rigby’ by The Beatles. It doesn’t have to be actually about suicide. It just has to have that tinge to it. Oppressively morose. Sweetly reminiscent. Powerfully nostalgic. It all works.

Question 2: What’s the last song you want to hear before you die?

This is the last song on earth playlist. I always wonder what mine will be. Morbid, I know. But I have one of those heads that cycles things over and over, so I’d like to not have Tom’s Diner guiding me through eternity. Anyway, I’m pretty sure I’m going to die by manually detonating an explosive device on the surface of an asteroid to save the earth from total annihilation. You don’t have to thank me now, just pick a great song.

Question 3: What’s a song to bring someone back from the brink?

Your best friend is on a ledge. You have one chance: one Say Anything moment to somehow purchase a boom box from the 80’s - stay with me here - and hold it up over your head. What song brings that person back to the land of the living?

Okay friends. Fill out the form below and I’ll add them to a playlist. (If they’re not on the form they won’t make it into the playlist) And throw them in the comments as well so we can all dish about it. Submit as many as you like.
