What is Your Favourite Quote From 'Game of Thrones'?

The moment is nigh. Anticipation is reaching fever pitch. Game of Thrones, undeniably the biggest televisual spectacle of the century, is finally returning to our screens this coming weekend!

Heading into the final two seasons of this epic story, I’ve been rewatching and reacquainting myself with the tale and its characters over the past few weeks and one thing struck me: Holy shit is this a quotable show. So much of Game of Thrones’ dialogue has made its way into popular discourse and our shared lexicon, I wondered whether I could choose my absolute, top favorite.

I couldn’t. Though I tried to narrow it down to one, maybe two, I failed. Miserably. So miserably. So, instead, here’s just a good old smattering:

Tywin Lannister - ‘Any man who must say, ‘I am the king’ is no true king. I’ll make sure you understand that when I’ve won your war for you.’

Stannis Baratheon - ‘Fewer.’

Oberyn Martell - ‘It is rare to meet a Lannister who shares my enthusiasm for dead Lannisters.’

Daenerys Targaryen - ‘Unsullied! Slay the masters, slay the soldiers, slay every man who holds a whip, but harm no child. Strike the chains off every slave you see!’

Brienne - ‘All my life men like you have sneered at me. And all my life I’ve been knocking men like you into the dust.’

Jon Snow - ‘Grenn came from a farm.’

Tyrion Lannister - Too. Many. Things.

Yara Greyjoy - ‘I never demand, but I’m up for anything really.’

Arya Stark - [shrugs] - in response to ‘A girl lacks honor’ from Jaqen H’ghar

Cersei Lannister - ‘Everywhere in the world, they hurt little girls.’

Jaime Lannister -‘“Burn them all,” he said “Burn them in their homes. Burn them in their beds”. Tell me, if your precious Renly commanded you to kill your own father and stand by while thousands of men, women, and children burned alive, would you have done it? Would you have kept your oath then? First, I killed the pyromancer. And then, when the king turned to flee, I drove my sword into his back. “Burn them all,” he kept saying “Burn them all”. I don’t think he expected to die. He… he meant to… burn with the rest of us and rise again, reborn as a dragon to turn his enemies to ash. I slit his throat to make sure that didn’t happen. That’s where Ned Stark found me.’

Barristan Selmy - ‘Even now, I could cut through the five of you like carving a cake!’

The Hound - ‘I understand that if any more words come pouring out your cunt mouth, I’m gonna have to eat every fucking chicken in this room.’

Olenna Tyrell - ‘Oh, you can smell the shit from five miles away.’

Syrio Forrel - ‘There is only one god and his name is Death, and there is only one thing we say to Death: “Not today”.’

Bronn - ‘No. He did.’

Varys -‘Power resides where men believe it resides. It’s a trick. A shadow on the wall.’

Tormund Giantsbane -‘Happy shitting.’

Davos Seaworth - ‘I’ve never been much of a fighter. Apologies for what you’re about to see.’

Lyanna Mormont - ‘Your son was butchered at the Red Wedding, Lord Manderly. And you refused the call. You swore allegiance to House Stark, Lord Glover, but in their hour of greatest need, you refused the call. And you, Lord Cerwyn - your father was skinned alive by Ramsay Bolton… still, you refused the call. But House Mormont remembers. The North remembers! We know no king but the King in the North whose name is Stark. I don’t care if he’s a bastard. Ned Stark’s blood runs through his veins. He’s my king from this day until his last day.’

But then, actually, I gave it some more thought. If someone had a gun to my head and forced me to pick just the one—just the one line that I can’t stop hearing in my head—I might be able to summon a nomination. Because for sheer writing, context, and that oh-so-perfect delivery, this might be the one that tops all of them:

Margaery Tyrell - ‘Forget about the bloody gods and listen to what I’m telling you. Cersei understands the consequences of her absence, and she is absent anyway. Which means she does not intend to suffer those consequences.’

What about you, dear Pajibans? What say you?
