I Started Something I Couldn't Finish: 5 TV Shows It's OK to Not Watch the Whole Way Through

Watching television is a two-part task to me: 1) It’s for pleasure, and 2) It’s for work. How do you think we come up with all of these lists and posts? So while I try my best to finish what I start, there are still a few shows that I haven’t gotten around to finishing. I have a friend who is in the middle of at least four television shows at the same time, including one she’s been working on since 2008. Here are the shows I’ve started but haven’t finished:

1. Carnivàle
A few years ago, I worked my way through the HBO circuit, catching up with the classics (Six Feet Under, The Sopranos, The Wire, etc.). I was (and still am) saving Deadwood to watch with my then-boyfriend/now-husband, so Carnivàle seemed like the next best thing. I enjoyed it at the beginning, but then I got lost and stopped paying attention during season two. Haven’t tried finding my way back since.

2. Weeds
After the crazy mess that was season seven, I had no desire to find out what happens to the Botwin clan (minus Andy—I still have all the love in the world for Andy).

3. Alias
It’s strange seeing peak Jennifer Garner now. And it’s sweet to see the beginnings of Michael Vartan, the love of my life based solely on Never Been Kissed. Spies are great and all, and ladies kicking ass is always excellent (see Jennifer Garner vs. Gina Torres), but I dunno…It’s a great “if there’s nothing else on” show, but that’s about it.

4. Dawson’s Creek
I was looking for something to fill my time after devouring Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and several friends recommended this teen drama. I LOVE My So-Called Life and Freaks and Geeks, so it seemed like an appropriate next step. I struggled through the first couple of episodes, because the New England kids didn’t captivate me as much as Angela and Lindsay did.

5. Sports Night
It’s not because I don’t love the show, because trust me, even with all the sports stuff, I really do. Casey McCall + Dan Rydell = Nate Fisher + Will Gardner = <3 True Love Forever. I finished season one on Netflix Instant quickly. But then I watched the season two premiere, and it threw me off completely. It was so shiny and brightly lit and sharp, not the fuzzy dark show I loved. Plus, there was that dumb stupid dating plan. And then Netflix took it off Instant. Story of my life.

What are your shows that you started but never finished?

Nadia Chaudhury also still needs to finish the latest season of House of Cards.
