Welcome to your daily reminder that Cancel Culture does not exist, at least when it comes to the truly powerful scumbags. Grand Central Publishing, a division of Hachette Book Group, announced yesterday that they will publish Woody Allen’s long-awaited (?) memoir, Apropos of Nothing on April 7th. They revealed that the book ‘will be published this spring in France, Germany, Italy, and Spain, followed by publications in countries around the world,’ and that Allen will do ‘several interviews’ in coordination with the book’s release. So yeah, expect those interviews to be really cutting and incisive and not total puff pieces by publisher-approved patsies.

In a statement, Allen said, ‘The book is a comprehensive account of his life, both personal and professional, and describes his work in films, theater, television, nightclubs, and print.’ The press release added that ‘Allen also writes of his relationships with family, friends, and the loves of his life.’ Well, ‘comprehensive’ is a word with no meaning now, I suppose. How sh*ttily do we think he’s going to be about Mia and Dylan Farrow in this? I shudder to think about how he writes about ‘the loves of his life’ given everything we know about his relationships.

As noted by Entertainment Weekly, Hachette’s division Little, Brown and Company published Ronan Farrow’s best-selling book Catch and Kill, which you should definitely read. They’re different divisions, obviously, but the optics at play here are certainly a choice.

Given that Allen basically can’t get American distribution for his films anymore because of, you know, that rape accusation made by his daughter Dylan, I’m curious to see who the domestic audience for this is. Can Allen still attract a hefty advance for this, like he would have a decade or so ago? Allen certainly has his many defenders and it’s not like he’s ever stopped working. He’s just finished making a new movie in Spain with Christoph Waltz, after all. European cineastes still adore him and invite him to festivals. He still attracts major A-List attention. Christ, we can’t even get the French film industry to stop giving awards to one child rapist so why stop with another alleged predator?

Read Ronan Farrow’s book instead.
