I don’t think it comes as a surprise to anyone that Jada Pinkett-Smith wasn’t the only person in her and Will Smith’s marriage to sleep with other people, which was more or less revealed during last year’s Red Table Talk between the couple. When Jada revealed she had an “entanglement” with August Alsina last year while she and Will were “amicably separated,” she also asked Will, “You gonna get me back? I think you got me back. I think we’re good on that, OK?”
“OK, that’s probably true,” Smith said at the time.
In the November edition of GQ, Smith went further, saying that Jada never believed in a “conventional marriage” and that they have tried different things to achieve “relational perfection.”
“There were significant endless discussions about, what is relational perfection? What is the perfect way to interact as a couple?” Smith said in the interview. “And for the large part of our relationship, monogamy was what we chose, not thinking of monogamy as the only relational perfection.”
“We have given each other trust and freedom, with the belief that everybody has to find their own way. And marriage for us can’t be a prison. And I don’t suggest our road for anybody. I don’t suggest this road for anybody. But the experiences that the freedoms that we’ve given one another and the unconditional support, to me, is the highest definition of love.”
Will “delicately explained” to interviewer Wesley Lowery that she wasn’t the “only one engaging in other sexual relationships.” Smith was reluctant to say more, although Lowery could sense that he wanted to. “It may seem hard to believe, but I would lose sleep over not giving you the answer that I know you could use,” Smith told GQ. “I want to help you, I want you to succeed, I want you to have a headline. But by the same token, I don’t want to deal with the backlash of that in the world. To say I don’t want to talk about that three years ago would have been fucking excruciating for me.”
What exactly is Will Smith holding back? Twitter certainly thinks it knows, but that tea is best left to the rumor bin. Meanwhile, the two have apparently achieved “unconditional love,” which is supposedly better than monogamy, although Zoe-Lister Jones may disagree.
