When the trailer came out for Independence Day: Resurgence recently, we all had a lot of reactions. But most of us had the reaction of “wait, where’s Will Smith and why won’t he be welcoming anyone to Earth?” Well, we know the answer to that and how Mr.Smith feels about it all. Minor spoilers below for information that is already available on the movie’s promotional website.
The promotional website for Independence Day: Resurgence is called “War of 1996” and tells the story of what happened after the war depicted in the original movie. One of the things mentioned on the website is the death of Col.Hiller, Smith’s character, who apparently died while test piloting an alien hybrid fighter plane. But why leave him out this way? According to Smith, he was allegedly too busy with Suicide Squad to be a part of the film. He also said that “It was terrible when I found out my character died.” Previously, director Roland Emmerich had said that Smith was “tired of sequels, and he did another science-fiction film, which was his father-son story, so he opted out.” I’m guessing the truth is somewhere in the middle, with Suicide Squad giving Smith a convenient out for a project it doesn’t sound like he was thrilled by. Celebrities! Also tired of sequels and reboots just like us!
