Why You Should Be Watching Maisie Williams' New YouTube Channel

To celebrate reaching 1 million followers on Twitter, Maisie Williams has launched her own YouTube channel. Titled Random Moments of Madness with Maisie Williams, the channel won’t have a definitive focus (at least not yet, as she figures the whole thing out), but is “mainly going to have videos of things that make me laugh. Sketches.” Williams says she won’t be posting there regularly, but it will be a place to share “something that made me smile or an idea that I have to let my creative juices out.” Now, it may be easy to dismiss this as something you are to old for, and while you may be wondering why a star of one of the biggest television shows to ever hit HBO is slumming it on the internet, this is actually a smart move for little Arya, and one we should probably be paying attention to.

Whether we like it or not, YouTube (and Vine and Snapchat and Periscope) has become an important platform in entertainment, and is only growing. Not only are millennials barely watching regular television, but we’re entering a time when social media influencers (i.e. Vine stars with a butt-ton of teenage followers) are getting cast in actual movies as studios hope to cash in on their built-in advertising power.

Still, while YouTube may be a great source of inspiration, humor, and tutorials from 13-year-olds teaching you how to work Photoshop, it’s also the place that makes entitled assholes famous and makes teenagers into millionaires.

So if Maisie Williams wants to jump on this YouTube train, I’m all for it. Not only will she stay at the center of her audience’s attention, no matter what direction traditional entertainment takes, but she’s a great contender to keep the douche-factor average of the teen YouTube star market down. Just take a look at what this tiny, sharp feminist warrior gave us in her first Q&A-based video.
