Why Is Meg Ryan Trending Right Now?

If you were doing internet things on the internet tonight, you may have come across something that looked like this:

That’s the kind of blurb or headline I usually skim right past. Sometimes— having to spend my entire day internetting— I spend hours repeatedly skimming past it. But I don’t click. Because I don’t care. Why the hell would I care that Meg Ryan went to Fashion Week? I don’t, right? Right. It’s not until hours later that I will sometimes realize one of these headlines has gotten under my skin. Because the question turns from why would I care about a silly thing to why should I care. Why do people care about Meg Ryan being at a fashion show? Why the hell is that news? Why is it trending in my sidebar ALL DAY?

Well, when was the last time you saw Meg Ryan ANYWHERE?

You may not have realized (I sure didn’t), but Meg Ryan has turned into a bit of a recluse. She’s not full J.D. Salinger, but for a woman who was EVERYWHERE from the mid-80s to the early aughts, she is suddenly nowhere. She hasn’t done a movie since 2009, though she did do Lisa Kudrow’s Web Therapy (presumably because she knew exactly zero people were watching).

And not only is she taking a break from acting, she also hasn’t made a public appearance in over a year. She came out in April of 2014 to be honored by Rob Reiner at the Charlie Chaplin Gala, and the summer before that, she came for a Italian film festival gala in her honor. But as far as I can find, the last time she was at an event she wasn’t specifically being honored at (meaning she’s basically required to attend), and not just photographed because she was at a play or a cricket game or walking down the street in a hat and sunglasses— was the summer of 2012, when she was doing some sort of promotion with PBS.

So it makes sense that Meg Ryan, decades-long “It” Girl and mega movie star, would make news when going to an event for the first time in years. But why did she turn so reclusive in the first place? Beats me. My best guess, though, is that she got tired of headlines like these when she DID decide to leave the house.

Oh, just go straight to hell, you boorish, sexist headlines. And every tweet about her face can follow right behind. Amazing how shocked some people still are that women don’t stay 25 forever, not even Meg Ryan.

By the way, Ryan has two films in development right now, according to IMDB, including a reteam with Tom Hanks. So fans of 1993, celebrate!

Vivian Kane is sure that by the time you read this, Meg Ryan will no longer be trending, and the “right now” of this headline will make her look foolish.
