Yesterday, Whoopi Goldberg was a no-show on The View. Fill-in moderator Joy Behar explained that she was “off doing something really exciting,” but couldn’t get into specifics. However, Joy said that if viewers tune in next Monday, Whoopi will be back to “tell you what it is.” She added, “Trust me, it’s a good one.” Hmmm. Consider my interest piqued.
Today, Whoopi took to Instagram to give fans a big ol’ hint. In a series of Stories, Whoopi detailed her journey from Rome to Vatican City. Whoopi? Catholicism? Mystery project? It doesn’t take the psychic powers of Oda Mae Brown (Whoopi’s character in Ghost) to put two and two together: This is Sister Act-related!
In her first Story, Whoopi leaves her hotel in Rome and announces that she’s headed to Vatican City: “Why? You’ll find out.” In Story #2, she’s sitting in the car (later revealed to be just outside St. Peter’s Basilica) and says, “This is very exciting. I’m not really saying what we’re doing yet because I want to savor this experience.” In the next Story, she reveals that she’s just had “the most exquisite experience.”
Then, the Big Reveal (Grande Rivelazione). Whoopi appears in St. Peter’s Square and basically spills everything:
Maybe, since you’re seeing everything, you’re figuring out what I’m doing here, but picture Sister Act and all the nuns standing here, waiting for the Pope to come out. Maybe that’s going to happen in the new movie. You don’t know. You never know, but we are in Rome, and I am in Vatican City. What could I be doing? Why could I be here? We’ll find out.
In the next Story, Whoopie gives us Grande Rivelazione Parte II: Pope Francis’ Version:
So, yeah, remember I said I was here and we’re looking at all these different things, and… I think I forgot to mention, I met the Pope today. It was pretty remarkable.
Whoopi’s been vocal about wanting to do a third Sister Act movie for years. In 2020, Tyler Perry signed on to be her co-producer. Last September, he went on The View and revealed there was “a good script” in place for the film, “but the Hollywood system moves a little slower than I’d like to.” Madhuri Shekar wrote the script, and Tim Federle will direct.
The movie will eventually premiere on Disney+, like the other Kathy Najimylong-awaited sequel, Hocus Pocus 2. Whoopi has said, “the nuns are all waiting,” and “maybe there’s gonna be some of the kids from Sister Act 2. Who can say?” Keke Palmer told Whoopi she’d love to be involved, and she’s listed as a cast member on the movie’s IMDb page (but who knows if that means anything).
It sounds like we’ll have to tune into The View on Monday to get the full story. Or just watch the Vatican City clips on YouTube. Probably the latter.
