I love Gerard Butler. When he’s good, he’s entertaining, but the true magic of Gerard Butler lies when he’s bad. Like, Dracula 2000, bad.

It’s always great to see him try in his movies, as Kayleigh recently reviewed in his lighthouse movie, but it’s even more thrilling when he’s phoning it in and not even trying. See Steven’s review of that bonkers submarine movie that I loved, but that’s because I love trash Gerard Butler movies. Relatedly, see TK’s review of Den of Thieves, which is a dumbed down Heat for people without attention spans. So of course I loved it.

Anyway, my profound love for trash Butler movies made me we wonder about the man himself—primarily, what is his character alignment?

Obviously, we will deep dive into this the only way I know how: social media posts.

So, what type of character alignment are we dealing with here?

First, we have to rule out some things, because honestly I need to turn this post in about 20 minutes from now and I’m very behind schedule.

So … I think we can rule out any sort of “lawful” alignment, due to the phoned-in performance that Butler delivers when he thinks he can get away with it.

I think we also have to rule out any “Good” alignments as well, because it seems that Butler’s public persona isn’t orientated towards the greater good.

So we’re dealing with 4 character alignment types, summarized here, as:

Chaotic Neutral: “A chaotic neutral character follows his whims. He is an individualist first and last. He values his own liberty but doesn’t strive to protect others’ freedom.”

Chaotic Evil: “A chaotic evil character does whatever his greed, hatred, and lust for destruction drive him to do. He is hot-tempered, vicious, arbitrarily violent, and unpredictable.”

True Neutral: “A neutral character does what seems to be a good idea. She doesn’t feel strongly one way or the other when it comes to good vs. evil or law vs. chaos.”

Neutral Evil: “A neutral evil villain does whatever she can get away with. She is out for herself, pure and simple.”

OK. So, with that in mind, I don’t think we’re dealing with Chaotic Evil, either. Trump is Chaotic Evil. Gerard Butler seems to be many things, but Trumpian isn’t an adjective I’d use.

So we’re left with the other three options. Let’s take a stroll down Instagram, shall we?

Exhibit 1: SCOTLAND

So, like, I’ve watched this mesmerizing video a few times. I don’t know what it is about it, but it’s very soothing.

Gerard Butler is clearly demonstrating a love of nature, but he’s grounding it in his own personal narrative “home.” He’s also not asking you to call attention to anything other than himself, so I think this is a point in a “Neutral” category.

Exhibit 2: Charity

So, he’s engaging in charitable work, but he’s talking about his own experiences, here. Not particularly touching on the experiences of others, or helping them. I think we have another point in Neutral’s favor, in particular Chaotic Neutral.

Exhibit 3: Cheer Me Up!

Yeah, friends, based on this third video, I am pretty certain that Gerard Butler’s character alignment is Chaotic Neutral because it’s clear he’s individualistic but doesn’t particularly care about anyone plight’s above his own. Honestly, it isn’t a bad character alignment to have; he’s in good company with Shoots-First Han Solo (pre-conscience). It also jives with his phoned-in performances, because he’s clearly doing it for himself (and honestly, me) and basically no one else.

Shine on, you crazy bastard. Shine on.
