What Happened to Charlie Talbert, the Lead in the Fat-Kid Movie, 'Angus'?

People don’t talk about it often enough when they discuss the great teen movies of the 1990s, but one of my very favorites was a movie called Angus, with — among others — George C. Scott, Rita Moreno, Kathy Bates, and James Van Der Beek. It was directed by Patrick Read Johnson who — as I recall — had a semi-autobiographical movie about the opening of Star Wars starring John Francis Daley called 5-25-77 that never saw the light of day, though I very much remember the magical trailer for it.

Anyway, Angus turns 20 this year, and I still think about it sometimes (I wrote a review of it for our underappreciated gems section seven years ago). I think about the spectacular “who’s the freak” speech Angus gave in the end, before he punched out James Van Der Beek. I think about the killer Love Spit Love opening sequence, and I think about the incredibly sweet dance scene.

Whatever happened to Melissa LeFevre, anyway? Actually, she was played by Ariana Richards — who was in Jurassic Park — and she was also in 5-25-77, after which she kind of disappeared.

It never occurred to me, however, to see what Charlie Talbert — who played Angus — was up to these days, but it didn’t take long to find out. He has a YouTube account, where he periodically uploads videos, mostly of his stand-up performances.

Angus is a stand-up comedian. I will leave you to decide whether he’s any good:

The first couple of jokes about rape and having sex with a special-needs kid didn’t sit well with me, particularly coming from Angus. But, your mileage may vary.
