TV Co-Stars Who Straight Up Hated Each Other

We all followed Archie vs. Julianna. We all know about Nathan Fillion making Stana Katic cry in her dressing room. And we know about the Golden Girls not being quite so golden and Shannen Doherty hating everyone and everyone hating her back. But these are hardly rarities in the celebrity world. Sometimes, co-workers just don’t get along. And sometimes Brett Butler flashes a child. Work, man, amirite?

Will Smith and Janet Hubert

We’ll let Aunt Viv herself take this one:

“[Smith] said ‘we’re just gonna replace her and act like nothing happened,’” Hubert recounted of her exit from the hit comedy in 1993. “Well honey, that is not what happened, is it? The world has let me know that my place on that show was very, very, very loved … I felt demonized and beaten up and crucified for many many years, no one came forward in my defense.”

At least we’ll always have her incredible moves.

Alex Karras, Susan Clark and Emmanuel Lewis

Alex Karras and Susan Clark started their own production company shortly after getting married, developing their own show Another Ballgame, in which they played characters inspired by Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn, who they were alleged to be reminiscent of. Sure why not. Then ABC had other ideas; chiefly the kid from the Burger King commercial. The network added in the cute kid, changed the name to Webster and the rest was history, unless you’re the child who was caught in the middle of this madness, with Clark and Karras engaging in near-constant fights with ABC and Paramount. The then young teen Lewis blamed himself for the infamous screaming matches, with the couple outraged they were being sidelined in their own show. Also, Karras played Mongo in Blazing Saddles. That has nothing to do with the rest of this; I just had no idea until now Mongo and George Papadopolis were the same guy.

Balthazar Getty and the Cast of Brothers and Sisters

Back in 2008, the world hadn’t yet realized slut shaming was a thing and everyone hated Sienna Miller. Miller started a relationship with Balthazar Getty, a star of Brothers and Sisters. He was married. And his castmates were PISSED. Partly because they liked his wife; partly because Miller had previously dated Getty’s co-star Matthew Rhys. So Getty got fired, and Miller was eternally branded a homewrecker.

David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson

For reasons they still can’t quite explain, Duchovny and Anderson did not get along initially. Duchovny told Variety earlier this year, “The crucible of doing that show made monsters out of both of us.” Anderson said that while the two “hated each other” they’ve since made up and are super cool now.

Tisha Campbell and Martin Lawrence

It actually feels deeply unfair to include this among more standard “he was a dick/she was an asshole” stories, but FYI if you didn’t know, Campbell had to sue for “repeated and escalating sexual harassment, sexual battery, verbal abuse and related threats,” which was only settled once it was determined Campbell would not have to be on set at the same time as Lawrence. Now is not the appropriate time for your “Damn, Gina!” jokes.

Brett Butler and Julie White

Butler struggled hard with addiction during the run of Grace Under Fire. Unfortunately, her self-destruction led to mass destruction. According to a crew member, “The other crews were horrified with what we put up with. We were used to it. It’s like being an abused kid — you get used to the hits.” One of those hits? Butler lifted up her top and flashed the 12-year-old who played her son. He and Julie White, who played Butler’s best friend Nadine, quit the show. When describing working with Anne Hathaway, White praised the actress, but admits her bar was lowered by Butler, calling her time with her co-star “the biggest bad-behavior clusterfuck ever. You know, that woman [Brett Butler]—that was difficult. Since then, to actually upset me, behavior-wise, [Hathway] would have to take a shit in my shoes.”

Christine Baranski and Cybill Shepherd

According to Cybill creator Chuck Lorre, “Unfortunately, Christine Baranski won an Emmy after 13 episodes…so I got fired after 17.” This may be the entire cause of rumors Shepherd was jealous of Baranski. Shepherd addressed rumors of their feud in her book Cybill Disobedience, essentially saying they didn’t get along because Baranski didn’t want to get along, not because Shepherd was jealous. Alicia Witt, who played Shepherd’s daughter and about whom Shepherd wrote truly nasty things in the book, wrote this classy response in a Reddit AMA: “well. she kinda said some pretty mean things about pretty much everyone she ever worked with, as i understand :) all i can say on that topic is, a lot of what was said about the all of the people she made mention of who were involved with ‘cybill’ was simply not true. it was sad (and hurtful to me, both on my behalf and on behalf of my amazing colleagues) to hear about it. but you know what, i have so many amazing memories of the experience in general, and that is what stays with you in the end.”

For what it’s worth, Lorre also created Grace Under Fire. It’s entirely possible Lorre might get off on hiring “difficult” people, be they infamous show fighters or serious addicts and then reaping the benefits.

Lauren Graham and Scott Patterson

Rumors plagued Gilmore Girls’ Luke and Lorelai for years, with Graham being such a precious peach the unkindest thing she would say was “we’re not intimates” and generally gave professional nonanswers to the question. Amy Pietz, who played Patterson’s wife in Aliens in America, was not so concerned with the niceties. “The guy who played my husband was … horrible. And I don’t mind saying that in public. And that experience was one I never want to repeat, so now I’m doubly careful.”
