Trump Might Tweet Us Into Nuclear War, But Twitter Suspends Rose McGowan’s Account

President* Donald Trump has tweeted insults against Democrats and Republicans, thinly veiled threats at the media, and even taunts about North Korea’s leader Kim Jong-un. Many users have openly called for Twitter to suspend his account so this reckless, nuke-loving moron doesn’t tweet us into World War III. But hey, actress/advocate Rose McGowan was getting pretty uppity. So while Twitter acts helpless in the face of Trump tweets and wave upon wave of white supremacists using their website to spread misinformation, hatred and terror, Twitter suspended McGowan, probably because she cursed at Batman.

In the wake of the repulsive Harvey Weinstein revelations, McGowan has not only spoken out about her assault at the hands of the studio exec, but also become one the most vocal in her criticisms of his colleagues. She’s denounced celebrities who claim they knew nothing of Weinstein’s reputation for harassment and assault, and has repeatedly called for the firing of the entire Weinstein Company board. Apparently something in there violated Twitter’s mysterious guidelines. McGowan posted about her suspension on Instagram.

TWITTER HAS SUSPENDED ME. THERE ARE POWERFUL FORCES AT WORK. BE MY VOICE. #ROSEARMY

Notably, Twitter did not inform McGowan which of her tweets got her suspended. Which is suspect considering that when you report a Twitter account, users HAVE to select a tweet or several. So let’s investigate. Twitter is fine with these tweets from Trump:

And you can search just about any slur to find a bevy of tweets Twitter’s also totally cool with. Now admittedly, not every use of a slur is insulting. Context matters. Like here:

Now, McGowan might not be able to use her account, but it’s still live. So let’s look at her recent tweets, and try to determine which was a bridge too far for Twitter.

One last note. Some have suggested that there’s a fine/dumb line on Twitter where you can say “Fuck you, Ben Affleck,” but you can’t say, “Fuck you, @BenAffleck.” If you @ someone with profanities, you get suspended. But here’s the counterpoint to that argument. The Tick’s Griffin Newman tweets this at Trump once every day.

Seriously, every day. Did he get suspended ever? Nope. He pointed out this crass double standard here:

Update:

Note, however, that it’s been 12 hours, which is to say, the suspension lapsed. It wasn’t lifted.
