Tony Romo Only Sees Wives

“All they keep asking me / Is if I’m gonna be your bride / The only kind of girl they see / Is a one night or a wife,” go the lyrics of Taylor Swift’s song, “Lavender Haze,” off the album Midnights. It seems she was talking about Tony Romo, the former quarterback-turned-sports broadcaster, who keeps referring to Swift as Travis Kelce’s “wife” instead of “girlfriend.”

The first time he made the error was on December 10th, when Kelce’s Chiefs were playing the Buffalo Bills.

“As you see, Kelce’s Wife, Taylor Swift, in the audience,” Romo said over footage of Swift clapping in the stands. “I’m sorry, girlfriend,” he corrected through laughter.

And then he did it again on Christmas Day during the Chiefs/Raiders game.

“His wife loves it — I mean, girlfriend,” he said over more footage of Swift clapping.

I’ve listened to both of these clips more times than I care to admit, and I have come to the conclusion that Romo is doing this on purpose because he thinks it’s funny. This is a 43-year-old man basically saying, “Make an honest woman out of that little girl!” and chuckling to himself while he smashes a raw egg in his fist and eats it, or whatever it is ex-football players obsessed with matrimony do.

I was worried about Swift getting so serious with a football player precisely for this reason. So far, Kelce has come across as a somewhat traditional-leaning, family-oriented “gentleman,” a word I use because I think he would use it for himself, but the line between that and All-American machismo is paper thin.

A woman like Swift, rich and powerful and—GASP—unmarried, is probably terrifying to the NFL and their good old boys, like Romo. You just know they’re champing at the bit to get her and Kelce wed already so they can get that halftime show. The Super Bowl is only a couple of short months away!
