I am solidly in the middle of the pack for Gen-X, and I will never get over the death of Kurt Cobain. Tony Hawk and I are alike in that. Except he is much more closely connected to Cobain than I will ever be. SIGH.

Tony Hawk, the legendary, innovative skateboarder, and spokesperson for bone and muscle health supplements (we’re old Gen-X, we’re old!), has a son named Riley. Riley married Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love’s daughter, Frances Bean, in October of 2023. In September of 2024, the young, super cool awesome couple welcomed their first child, Ronin Walker Cobain Hawk, to the earth.

Tony is enjoying being a grandfather (again, we’re old, Gen-X) and is teaching Ronin all of the right things.

But last week, he broke my heart when he posted a picture of a ticket stub from a 1991 Houston, Texas, Nirvana concert to his Instagram stories, with a message about Kurt over it.

Went straight from S.U.A.S. event at Houston skatepark to this concert in 1991. It was as transformative as live music can possibly be, we all experienced something rare and powerful that night. The world would never be the same. I wish Kurt were here so he could see the incredible woman his daughter has become, meet her devoted, caring husband, and hold our wonderous grandchild.

Excuse me, I’ll just be over here crying into a pile of concert tees. In an alternate universe, Kurt Cobain and Tony Hawk are chillin’ on the porch steps, noodling on a guitar, working on a skateboard, surrounded by their kids and grandkids, just living their weird, quirky lives in cozy cardigans.

I would like to go to there.
