Tom Hardy Gets Pissy with a Reporter For Asking About His Sexuality

Typically, if an actor gets upset with a journalist for asking an invasive question — especially one about an actor’s sexuality — I’m going to side with the actor, who rightfully gets bent out of shape over an inappropriate question.

But here, I’m not so sure. Because Tom Hardy has freely — and exuberantly — answered questions about his sexuality in the past. In fact, he admitted to dabbling into flings with other men back in 2008, and in this case, a reporter from Daily Xtra, a Toronto LGBT publication, was referring to that very interview when asking Hardy the question in the context of a movie in which Hardy plays a bisexual gangster (in fact, in Legend, he plays two characters, identical twin gangsters, Ronnie Kray and Reggie Kray, who were 60’s London gangsters).

Nevertheless, Hardy wasn’t having any of it this time, and shut down the line of questioning when the reporter asked him about his “ambiguous” sexual history.

“What on earth are you on about?” Hardy asked?

When the reported cited the previous interview he gave admitting to gay relationships, Hardy shot back, “But what is your question?”

From THR:

“I’m wondering if you find it difficult for celebrities to talk about their sexuality,” the reporter returned. Hardy then asked menacingly: “I don’t find it difficult for celebrities to talk about their sexuality. Are you asking about my sexuality?”

“Hum… sure,” the reporter replied, showing the strain of their encounter. It was easy to see now why Hardy, who plays twin brothers as villainous murderers in Legend, is a go-to to embody intimidating film characters.

“Why?” Hardy questioned, before dismissing the reporter with a final “thank you,” while director Helgeland and co-star Emily Browning looked on uncomfortably.

I guess you never know what Tom Hardy you’re going to get on any particular day: The playful Tom Hardy who er_than_you/good-morning-here-is-tom-hardy-cuddling-dogs.php">plays with dogs, refuses to be embarrassed about his underwear selfies on MySpace, or jovially discusses his Dubsmash recordings, or if you’re going to get the cranky Tom Hardy who embarrasses a reporter from an LGBT publication for asking if Hardy shares the bisexual inclinations of the character he plays in a movie, as he’s hinted at in the past?

It wouldn’t be the first time, however, that Hardy called out a reporter for an inappropriate question. So, junket reporters, be warned and test the man’s mood before digging too deep.
