The Olympics showcase some of the greatest athletes in the world. People from across the globe spend their lives training and grinding, just for a chance to qualify for the legendary games. They push their bodies to the absolute limits of what they can achieve. Then, they push even harder. Olympic athletes are a marvel, and it makes sense that people tune in to watch them compete. It’s exciting to watch human beings explore the limits of what humans are capable of, be it on the field, or hanging from the side of an airplane.

Tom Cruise has been a bonafide star for decades. Movies get made and seen based on whether or not he is in them. He’s got the look, the style, and the questionable personal life to make him like catnip for the movie-going public. However, over the last decade-plus, Cruise has been reinvigorating his career by putting his life at risk. Yes, he’s working with some of the best stunt performers and designers in the business to minimize risk. That said, hanging off of a plane is still risky!

The shift has certainly paid off. While Cruise’s last Mission Impossible film underperformed by current standards, it is still a hit franchise that thrives on its big stunts and set pieces. There doesn’t look to be any end to them. As long as Cruise feels the urge to jump across buildings and ride a motorcycle off a cliff, they will keep getting made.

It helps that Cruise isn’t slowing down either. There are rumors that he will be transferring his Hollywood powers over to Glen Powell in some sort of popcorn-swimming ritual, but that has to go through the tribunal first. Cruise is making deals at Warner Brothers, getting rumored for every franchise under the sun, and bringing his stunt performing to the Olympics. Wait, what?

TMZ is reporting that Cruise pitched himself as the closing act for this year’s games. The 2028 Olympics will take place in L.A. and Cruise wanted in on the action. TMZ says, “The TV broadcast will then cut to a previously recorded film … and the first 2 minutes shows Tom’s journey on an airplane … flying with the Olympic flag from France to Los Angeles, where he skydives down to the Hollywood sign.”

Like Randy Newman, Cruise loves L.A. It only makes sense that he gets in on the celebration. The only question now is will he be able to top this stunt in four years for the opening ceremony? I’ll be keeping my fingers crossed.
