I think this is one of those articles where I am ignorant of the subjects, but — like those HGTV series — I am surprised to learn how much our readers know about them. Until this week, I thought that Chrisley Knows Best was the reality show starring the ex-wife of Kevin from This Is Us. That’s actually Chrishell Stause. She’s in a reality series called Selling Sunset, and — so far as we know — she’s not going to prison anytime soon.

I was right in that Selling Sunset and Chrisley Knows Best are both reality shows about real estate. Chrisley Knows Best is about real estate tycoon Todd Chrisley and his wealthy family, and there are five spin-offs, which air on the USA Network. Or rather, there would be five spin-offs, except that the fifth, Love Limo, probably won’t be going into production because its host, Todd Chrisley, will probably be in prison.

I have spent a few minutes this morning watching trailers for Chrisley Knows Best and Todd strikes me as controlling/abusive, while his wife, Julie, seems very, um, Southern. I suspect the series is so popular because people hate them and want to see them fail.

They’re in luck, as they have been found guilty of, among other crimes, tax evasion and bank fraud. Despite all their “success,” it seems that much of their wealth was a mirage. From the AP:

Before the Chrisleys became reality television stars, they and a former business partner submitted false documents to banks in the Atlanta area to obtain millions of dollars in fraudulent loans, prosecutors said. They spent lavishly on luxury cars, designer clothes, real estate, and travel and used new fraudulent loans to pay old ones, they said. Todd Chrisley then filed for bankruptcy, walking away from more than $20 million in loans, prosecutors said.

A real house of cards there. Presumably, this is the same business partner with whom Todd is alleged to have had a lengthy affair, and whom he paid $38,000 in extortion money to keep it quiet.

Todd filed for bankruptcy around the time that their series began to air, at which point he funneled all their money from the productions and other businesses through an account in Julie’s name to avoid paying taxes. In fact, the couple didn’t pay taxes for several years despite millions in earnings, and Julie used false documents to keep them housed.

A 10th season of the series is scheduled to begin this month. Todd and Julie Chrisley face 30 years in prison.
