This first Monday in May is home to the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s annual Met Gala, a lavish display of fashion and celebrity that remains one of the most iconic red carpet events of any given year. While the Met had initially said that they would go on with the event, following recent news regarding the rapid spread of the COVID-19 virus and subsequent safety measures implemented across the board, the Gala has been indefinitely postponed.

Last Thursday, the Met itself announced it was closing ‘until further notice’ after two of its employees came down with flu-like symptoms. After the Centers for Disease Control advised against gatherings of more than 50 people, the museum decided, along with many other institutions, to not go ahead with its grand gala.

The fashion world, like basically every other industry and part of our lives, has been greatly impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. The season’s major runway shows saw swaths of cancelations and no-shows, particularly in Italy and France where the virus has been particularly brutal. Some in the fashion world have responded in more empathetic ways. LVMH, the luxury goods company behind Louis Vuitton and Givenchy, announced that it planned to produce hand sanitizer at three of its perfume and cosmetics factories to distribute to French hospitals running low on supplies. Donatella Versace and her daughter Allegra donated €200,000 to the San Raffaele hospital in Milan, which has experienced overcrowding and lack of resources due to the virus.

Maybe you’re not all that fussed about the Met Gala or fashion and all that jazz given everything going on in the world, but this is a sign of how every industry and way of life right now is dealing with this unprecedented fallout.

Besides, maybe we could all use a fun distraction right now, so please feel free to turn the comments of this piece into a Met Gala fashion nostalgia pic-splurge!
