Top Gear is one of those shows that exists on the outer edge of my own pop culture orbit; I know a lot of people who like it but I don’t really watch it so most of my knowledge is second or third hand. That said, I have picked up over the years that host Jeremy Clarkson is not, perhaps, the kindest individual and the most recent incident seems to bolster that perception; Clarkson was suspended, and his remaining episodes pulled from broadcast after he got into an “alleged altercation” with a producer.
Today, a petition with one million signatures calling for Clarkson’s reinstatement was delivered to the BBC via a tank with someone dressed as the Stig riding it. By the way, if you click that link, understand that this seems to have been done less out of genuine concern for Clarkson’s career and more to promote a company that lets you rent tanks out for events if you happen to be in the UK. This is the online petition, which does have over a million signatures but is still short of its 1.5 million goal. Which seems impressive until you notice that the Top Gear fan page has 14.5 million likes on Facebook.
As of this time, there is no word on Clarkson’s fate. Feel free to discuss below.
