The Craziest Shit Marion Cotillard Has Ever Said

When I wrote this morning about the talented, stunningly gorgeous Marion Cotillard and her disappointing feelings about feminism, a lot of you in the comments gave me a beautiful gift. The gift of pointing me towards a rabbit hole of all the batshit crazy things Cotillard has said over the years. Oh man, I had no idea. No idea at all.

Let’s get those feminism comments out of the way, just in case you need a refresher.

Filmmaking is not about gender. You cannot ask a president in a festival like Cannes to have, like, five movies directed by women and five by men. For me it doesn’t create equality, it creates separation. I mean I don’t qualify myself as a feminist.

We need to fight for women’s rights, but I don’t want to separate women from men. We’re separated already because we’re not made the same, and it’s the difference that creates this energy in creation and love. Sometimes in the word ‘feminism’ there’s too much separation. (Porter)

Some of her thoughts are just silly uber-hippie stuff that would actually be profound if not phrased quite so cultishly.

I think the Earth and everything around it is connected—the sky and the planets and the stars and everything else we see as a mystery. I think we connect when we accept that the mystery is also taking place here on the ground. We live on Earth and have jobs and interact in society, but we still exist because there is a moon rotating around us, and a sun we rotate around. (Interview Magazine)

She may actually believe the camera steals your soul.

When you see yourself on video, you and your friends spending time on vacation, and they take a video, and then you see it, it’s really disturbing. (Ask Men)

Some of it just makes you want to pat her on the head.

You know what? I would love to go into an animal’s dream—like a lion’s or a cat’s. I’m sure that’s pretty awesome. (Interview Magazine)

But not all of it. Like her thoughts on 9/11— specifically the “money sucker” that was the Twin Towers, “which would have cost so much to modernize that it was easier to destroy them.”

I think we’re lied to about a number of things. We see other towers of the same kind being hit by planes. Are they burned? [There] was a tower, I believe it was in Spain, which burned for 24 hours. It never collapsed. None of these towers collapsed. And there [in New York ], in a few minutes, the whole thing collapsed.

Or the moon landing.

Did a man really walk on the moon? I saw plenty of documentaries on it, and I really wondered. And in any case I don’t believe all they tell me, that’s for sure

But maybe we shouldn’t be so hard on Marion. It’s not easy, you know, to be so deep all the time.

I am not very good at expressing myself in a simple way so it can create misunderstandings and I hate that. (Telegraph)
