That Time Zoe Kravitz Was "Too Urban" To Be In A Batman Movie

Actress Zoe Kravitz is having one hell of a summer thanks to prime roles in such hits as Dope and Mad Max: Fury Road. Better yet, she’s using her time in the spotlight to call out some racist bullshit she’s face along the way to fame.

In an interview with Nylon magazine, Kravitz shared about the time she tried to get into The Dark Knight Rises auditions. “In the last Batman movie,” She began, “They told me that I couldn’t get an audition for a small role they were casting because they weren’t ‘going urban.’”

Now, we know “urban” means “black” in that oh-so-subtly yet still shitty racist way. But Kravitz called out this bullshit label adding, “It was like, ‘What does that have to do with anything?’ I have to play the role like, ‘Yo, what’s up, Batman? What’s going on wit chu?’”

While Kravitz doesn’t specify which Dark Knight Rises role, we’d wager it was for Catwoman’s barely-there gal pal “Jen,” played by Juno Temple who brought a kind of bohemian vibe to the part. If that’s what they were going for, fine. But that shouldn’t have barred Kravitz from auditioning, as she could have done boho chic. After all, it’s in her blood, being she’s the daughter of boho fashion goddess Lisa Bonet.

But hey, props to Kravitz for 1) succeeding despite the pigeonhole nonsense of Hollywood, and 2) speaking out about it. WITNESS HER!

Kristy Puchko wanted to be Lisa Bonet when she grew up still wants to be Lisa Bonet.
