Our mommas always told us, “If you can’t say something nice, don’t say nothing at all,” which is why we’re not covering the passing of Toby Keith this morning. Interestingly, however, it was Toby Keith’s record company, Big Machine Records, that originally signed Taylor Swift. The royalties from that made up a good deal of the late singer’s fortune. The sale of Big Machine Records to Scooter Braun in 2019 also led to an ugly dispute over Swift’s ownership of her master recordings.
There will be no such dispute over Taylor Swift’s next album, which she announced at the Grammys would be released in April. The new record holder for the number of Album of the Year Grammys said that the title of the album would be The Tortured Poets Department, and we have subsequently seen a list of the track titles and collaborators: Post Malone and Florence + the Machine. Here’s the list:
“Fortnight” (featuring Post Malone)
“The Tortured Poets Department”
“My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys”
“Down Bad”
“So Long, London”
“But Daddy I Love Him”
“Fresh Out the Slammer”
“Florida!!!” (featuring Florence + the Machine)
“Guilty As Sin?”
“Who’s Afraid Of Little Old Me?”
“I Can Fix Him (No Really I Can)”
“LOML”
“I Can Do It With A Broken Heart”
“The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived”
“The Alchemy”
“Clara Bow”
Bonus Track: “The Manuscript”
There’s already speculation, naturally, that the song titles refer to various ex-boyfriends, specifically Joe Alwyn and Matty Healy, the lead singer of the 1975. Swift and Alwyn dated for six years, so I suspect there will be plenty of material related to that relationship. It’s also probably too early to assume that “LOML” (Love of my life) is a reference to the Kansas City Chiefs tight end.
Taylor Swift’s boyfriend will be playing the San Francisco 49ers in the Super Bowl this Sunday. In unrelated news, I hope The Chicks (formerly The Dixie Chicks) are having a nice day.
