Taylor Swift posted a typed Instagram story—written in her branded 1989 script—about her devastation over the death of a fan at her Era’s Tour show in Brazil on Friday.
“I can’t believe I’m writing these words but it is with a shattered heart that I say we lost a fan earlier tonight before my show. I can’t even tell you how devastated I am by this. There’s very little information I have other than the fact that she was so incredibly beautiful and far too young.”
She said she wouldn’t speak about the tragedy on stage because she was “overwhelmed by grief” and added, “This is the last thing I ever thought would happen when we decided to bring this tour to Brazil.”
Though the exact cause of the fan’s death is unclear; there have been videos from the South American leg of the tour showing Swift going to great lengths to make sure her fans are hydrated. The stadium in Brazil “banned fans from bringing in water bottles amid temperatures rising to nearly 100 degrees Friday.” At one point, Swift even paused the show to say, “There’s people that need water right here, maybe 30, 35, 40 feet back, so whoever is in charge of giving them that, just make sure that happens. Can I get a signal that you know where they are?”

An event organizer said in a tweet that “the fan who died was 23-year-old Ana Clara Benevides Machado, who apparently “felt unwell at the venue and was attended to by first responders” before being taken to the hospital.
Hopefully, someone on her team is already yelling at whoever is in charge and ordering free water for everyone. Heaven forbid the venue lose a few dollars.
