Not to be confused with his super cringe TV persona, Michael Scott from The Office, Steve Carell made an only slightly cringe YouTube video to announce a boon granted to Altadena, CA high school seniors by Alice’s Kids. The charity is paying for all of their prom tickets.

The Virginia-based children’s charity said that the prom promise will support approximately 800 students across six high schools, estimating the total cost to be around $175,000.

Alice’s Kids is a great organization that would never “Scott’s Tots” a bunch of kids who were impacted by the wildfires that ravaged parts of California earlier this year. I became familiar with them a few years back through Patton Oswalt’s support of the group and his social media posts about them.

Founded in 2011, the organization is one of the only charities that offer financial assistance directly to children via requests from teachers, parents, and other caregivers. They cover requests that seem small but make a huge impact on kids’ lives, allowing them to participate in activities and experiences they might otherwise be cut off from due to economic issues.

“Rosario’s (17) single Dad takes care of 6 kids so finances are tight. Rosario is in the National Honor Society & wants to join the Robotic team, but he must compete to get in. The problem is his Dad can’t afford the parts Rosario needs to build his robotic.” We paid for the parts!
“Madison (17) does EVERYTHING for her single Mom. Washing, cleaning, cooking, etc. And when she comes to school she is totally exhausted. We would like to make a space in the school where she can quietly rest (she gets here early). We were thinking of getting a Fold Out Bed for Adults with Built-in Mattress and Pillow. Would Alice pay for those items?” YES.
Toby (11) has multiple mental health diagnoses. He struggles with regulating his emotions and utilizing coping skills. But he has come a long way controlling his negative behaviors,. This summer, he started engaging in therapeutic horseback riding which he quickly fell in love with. He has developed a great, positive relationship with his riding instructor, and thinks she is the kindest person. The child has been granted a partial scholarship for lessons; however, mom still has to pay up to $50 out of pocket. Would Alice pay for a session?” We paid for three.

Steve Carrell was chosen by Ron Fitzsimmons, the Executive Director of Alice’s Kids, to make this announcement, which was broadcast at special school assemblies, because so many kids binged The Office during the Covid pandemic.

Have fun at prom! Remember to be home by curfew.
