Way back in 2013, I made a mistake. It happens. You see, while I had pretty much fallen for actress Maggie Gyllenhaal from the moment I first spied her, it wasn’t quite the same with her brother Jake. I thought he was just a guy Hollywood was trying too hard to make happen, and I put him in the same box as Bradley aka Emu Cooper. Even though, given the two actors, I leaned Gyllenhaal, I should have seen the magic shining through — and for that, I owe Jake a great big apology. Dude, I really get you now. Sure, we might all have been looking at Heath in Brokeback Mountain, but holding that against you wasn’t fair. And by the time you got to End of Watch, you had come into your own; I just wasn’t ready to admit it yet. Now here you are, making me feel actual things with these Southpaw trailers. Don’t tell anyone, but I nearly choke-sobbed when you scream into the bed; I get chills when you’re jumping rope, and then when you silent-yell in the ring…and that look on your face near the end — just, bra-fucking-vo.
I am verklempt. I’m sure y’all are, too — we were all there together during these moments, watching young Jake grow into the actor he is today. As for Emu, I know some of you like him just fine; he’s found his own kind of success, but I still feel absolutely nothing when I see him onscreen. His eyes read blank. They can nominate Emu for any award they like, and maybe he’ll even get himself that Oscar someday. But uh…well, Julia Roberts has one. Just sayin’.
Jake Gyllenhaal, people. This is how you do it.
Southpaw also stars Rachel McAdams, Forest Whitaker and Naomie Harris; catch it starting July 24th.
Cindy Davis, (Twitter) is duly ashamed.
